Why I Chose the Nisi JetMag Pro

Filters, we all need them. After using two different systems for photography and video, I wanted just one that works for everything. The Nisi JetMag Pro does that for me.

Magnetic System and Build Quality

These are magnetic filters, and while I liked the idea before, none of the systems I tried really executed it right. The JetMag Pro is different. You attach a magnetic base to your lens. It comes in several sizes depending on your kit. Mine included 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm rings, but you can get more from Nisi.

On this base, you attach your filters. The cool thing is that you can lock them by aligning the handle with a white line. Once aligned, the filters are super secure on the lens. The magnets are also very strong compared to other filters I used in the past.

Compared to other systems, the JetMag Pro has the thinnest filters I’ve used. They’re lightweight, sturdy, and have excellent coatings. They are also very easy to clean, which really matters to me.

Portability and Carrying Options

I’ve used these filters for a while now, and because they are so slim, it’s easy to carry them around without a case. You do get a case if you buy a kit, like the landscape kit, and it’s very nice, dust- and water-resistant, great for protecting the filters.

Being magnetic, they are also easy to stack, which means you can combine filters in many ways. The system also includes sturdy front and back caps. Just align the grips, lock them, and you no longer need a separate case. That’s how I carry them in my backpack.

When I went to Amsterdam for IBC and work, I carried the filters like this and had no issues with unlocking or damage. This feature makes my life easier.

Filters in Real Use

You don’t always need to stack all the filters. I used just the Black Mist filter for some street photography, the Variable ND 1–5 and the ND64 for video. The setup stays thin and compact, perfect for travel.

Because the light changes so quickly in Amsterdam, the Variable ND made my life easier. I could adjust the light quickly on an f/1.2 lens. I used these filters because I wanted to shoot wide open, and my Fujifilm X-E5 has a mechanical shutter limited to 1/4000. I didn’t want to use the electronic shutter, and even with two or three filters stacked, I didn’t see any loss in image quality.

I used three filters to shoot some footage, and there was no loss in detail. I especially love the Black Mist filter. It’s subtle but gives photos and videos a magic touch.

Color Coding and Practical Details

Another nice detail is that the filters are color-coded. The Mist is gold, the CPL silver, the caps grey, and the hard-stop NDs blue. The sides are labeled with the filter specs, which is handy since all NDs are blue. I just wish Nisi made them in slightly different shades of blue so you could tell the strength at a glance. Maybe in the next generation.

Because they are so thin, you can stack multiple filters on wide-angle lenses. Nisi says you can add two filters on a 15mm lens without vignetting, and that’s true. You can even add up to three filters for video. I also used them on anamorphic lenses with no issues, no weird flares or artifacts.

The Variable ND Filter

Now about the Variable ND. This is a true color filter, so you don’t get any strange color shifts. It locks in place like the others, and you can rotate it from one to five stops using the pin. It stops at both ends, so it won’t go further.

If you don’t like using the pin, you can rotate it by the grip, but I prefer using the pin. The locking position is larger on the Variable ND, which is a nice touch. You can also stack it on top of a hard ND to make a 6–9 stop Variable ND, so you don’t need two different VNDs.

Final Thoughts

The Nisi JetMag Pro offers a lot of flexibility. It’s easy and fast to use, has great optics and coatings, and the filters are slim, sturdy, and well built. This is a system you buy once and use for years. Nisi keeps expanding the lineup, and because the filters take up so little space, it’s perfect for travel and hiking.

They are also so lightweight that you can use them on smaller lenses like the Fujifilm XF 16–50mm without balance issues. All NDs in the JetMag system are full spectrum, so you get true-to-life colors even with multiple filters stacked.

Nisi did a great job with these filters. They made my life easier, and I don’t think I’ll replace them any time soon.
